Is Hello Hero WORTH Playing? My Hello Hero Review

Updated on December 6, 2014

Is Hello Hero worth playing?

If you know me, you know that I'm a major fan of Turn-Based strategy games like Pokémon and Final Fantasy. So when I discovered the game Hello Hero I was pretty ecstatic.

The game seemed to have everything I liked - cute, non-serious graphics (after being bombarded by realistic console graphics and next-gen MMOs, I needed some cartoon-silliness for a change), turned-based gaming, and a whole array of characters to use.

Well, It's been about 2 weeks of straight gaming of Hello Hero and I have some things to say about this game. Here is my Hello Hero Game Review.

Have you played Hello Hero?

What is Hello Hero?

Hello Hero is a turn-based strategy game with a battle system a lot like Final Fantasy 7. Once you start the battle, your team and your enemies will take turns fighting each other. You can play the game with the "Auto" mode on, or you can turn it off and activate the special abilities yourself.

Example of Hello Hero Gameplay

The above is a Youtube video of me playing Hello Hero. I used the Auto and 2X buttons so the battle can go faster. The normal battle speed is horrendously slow.

My First Initial Thoughts

When I started playing Hello Hero I thought this game was really fun, and I ended up playing it non-stop. In fact, there was a 3-day period where I did nothing but eat, sleep, use the restroom and play Hello Hero. The game was that good.

I even got my brother into the game since he's a fan of turn-based gaming.

Unfortunately, the game's charm took a nose dive

As I was mastering my heroes and gaining levels, I started to realize that this game was nothing but a farm fest for leveling up heroes.

Hello Hero was like taking Pokémon and stripping the adventure aspect of it. The game was nothing but leveling up your heroes.

I mean, if you're into collecting then I guess this game would be very fun for you. But if you're like me and you want a game that is more heavily reliant on skill and tactics, then Hello Hero is definitely not the online game you want to go for.

The PvP Aspect of this Game Sucks, Too

What I look forward to in online games is the user interaction. I want to be part of a community that either works together to fight an NPC, or battles each other. If there's no multiplayer aspect of a game, then I lose interest. PvM-based online gaming rarely ever holds my interest.

Unfortunately, Hello Hero's PvP isn't PvP at all.

When you go to the Colosseum to fight other players, you're not actually fighting them in real time. Players are required to register their party in order to participate in the arena. So you're actually fighting NPCs that are using other player's heroes. Lame!

The only interaction you can get from other players is the chat feature and friend feature.

UPDATE: Hello Hero has recently implemented a Guild feature, but it just seems like an extension of the chat feature.

Stamina/Energy Bar is Annoying

Facebook games are notorious for having stamina/energy bars implemented in their games. What this means is that you have a set amount of energy that caps out at a certain number. Once you run out of energy you have to wait for more energy to regenerate in order to continue playing. Or...

...you can buy more energy.

*cha-ching!*

Unfortunately Hello Hero isn't any different. Hello Hero has both a Stamina Bar that you use for monster battling (you use up 2 energy per battle), and an Energy Bar you use if you want to do Dungeons, Colosseum battles, or Special events like raids.

I guess I can't blame Hello Hero since they have to make money somehow, but I can't help but feel annoyed at this feature. What kind of online game would put a feature that prevents players from playing the game? It's absolute nonsense.

Hello Hero also lacks Growth

Sure, you can find good Heroes, create a team, and give them items, and expand your arsenal of available Heroes, but that's about it. There's no true training of Heroes (you can actually reach their maximum level of 30 relatively easily), or giving them new skills.

I think that's one of the BIGGEST turn offs about this game: that you can't make your Heroes stronger by helping them learn new skills.

In other online games like Atlantica you can help your Heroes become stronger by leveling them up and giving them new skills. With Hello Hero there's nothing like that. You are stuck with the skills that they have.

What this does is it forces the PvP system into a perpetual cycle of rock, paper, scissors. You can't win based on tactic; you are winning only if your opponent picks the wrong Heroes.

There will always be Heroes that are better than one type of Hero but worse against other types.

The Star System is also Garbage

In Hello Hero, they have a star rating system for heroes to determine their overall strength.

A 1-star hero is the very basic, Rattata-level hero. They are virtually worthless and are only used for leveling up and as sacrifices to upgrade your stronger heroes.

A 5-star hero is the rarest type of hero. It costs an arm and a leg to get this hero. It will take a LOT of upgrading in order to get a 5-star hero. You can also pay for a hero package, but there's a small chance of getting a 5-star hero.

The reason why I don't like this system is because it's driven on luck and grinding. I would prefer to have a hero, invest some time into him by training him and getting him new skills, and then have him be strong instead of a hero being naturally better just because of his rating.

It makes me feel like the time I spend on my current heroes is a waste of time unless they are 5-star heroes.

Does this game have ANY redeeming qualities?

I know I've been on a pessimistic rampage, but despite my disappointment there are some things I like about this game.

It's easy to obtain Carats (Premium Currency)

Unlike other Facebook games where it's virtually impossible to farm up premium currency, Hello Hero makes it very easy.

For every Hero that you master at level 30, you get 5 carats. Since there are hundreds of heroes in this game, that's a huge amount of carats to look forward to. You also get a carat mine that allows you to get 1 carat every 11 hours. The carat mine time decreases every time your account levels up.

You can also get carats from other activities, such as dungeoning, and having high rankings in the Colosseum.

The Cash Shop items aren't that expensive, either

The most expensive item in their Cash Shop is the 300 Carat "Royal (10+1) Hero package". I can easily get that package once every 3 weeks - 1 month if I do enough hero mastering.

Hello Hero is also Butt-Easy to Play

For a game that's all about farming and grinding, at least it's very easy to play. In fact, 95% of your gaming will be passive due to the game's Auto feature.

Unless you want to be crazy and grind manually, of course.

The Auto feature allows you to initiate a battle and have the CPU do the moves for you. They won't always have the smartest choices, but they do allow you to go into another tab and do something else until the battle is over.

Summary - Pros/Cons of Hello Hero

Pros
Cons
Easy Gameplay
Game gets boring very fast
Very easy to get Carats (premium currency)
User success is highly dependent on the Hero star feature
Lots of Heroes to play and master
No true PvP element
You can train your Heroes on Auto-Drive
There is a stamina/energy feature that prevents gameplay

Overall, I'm giving this game the following rating:

★★☆☆☆

2 Stars out of 5 Stars

The game has a lot of potential to be amazing, but the lack of PvP, Hero growth, and monotony of the gameplay keeps Hello Hero from being a game worth talking about.
